Why do Information Technology projects fail?

Why do Information Technology projects fail?

Many times IT projects fail, but the reasons are wide ranging. Just a few reasons and key learnings are listed below:
  1. Single Point of Contact - When a business owner doesn’t want to delegate responsibility to subordinate SPoC. Also, the business owner has little time to spend with the implementation team’s Project Leaders, no magical things would happen to save such projects. Therefore, it is essential to appoint a SPoC with proper authority to execute the project.
  2. Clarity of Scope - It is common tendency of people to keep adding new requirements as it comes to their mind. It is better to prioritise and have second deployment phase for additional feature requests or customization.
  3. Business Flows - The ROI would not justify if the system implementation team gets involved in business flow documentation. After all, every business is unique and it is fully understood by client’s team. Always ask the client to spend time in documenting Business Flows, however it can be validated by system implementation team and product experts.
  4. Change Management - It is a common tendency of the clients to expect it from System Integrator, which is absolutely wrong. The communication related to change is better handled by the client’s team. Of course, the guidance could be provided by system implementation team.
  5. End User Training - It should be an on-going exercise. Unless the end-users are involved early in the process for frequent validation of feature integrations, the system implementation team would delivery something that would fail to meet requirements. Fail fast as a best practice.
