Buying your own Domain Name for a website
Just like your address in the physical world, you need a Domain Name to have unique identity in your digital life over the Internet. There are many Domain Name sellers in the market. However, it is sometimes difficult to find a Domain Name of your choice, since many people might have already purchased that name before you therefore people try to tweak spellings to be as close to the name of their choice. Whatever is the case, do the note the following points.- Keep the name as simple as possible so that it's easy to remember
- Do not expose your personal information (e.g. Email address, phone number, payment information) on the Domain Name public services. Typically, these options are available from Domain Name registrar for additional cost.
- Connect the domain name with an Email service using MX records in DNS settings. In many cases, the Domain Name provider also offer cheaper Email services. In some cases, the Email service is free too.
- Connect the domain name with at least some web hosting service (or site) using A or CNAME records in DNS settings so that popular Search Engines (e.g. Google, Bing, Yahoo) start crawling and indexing the website to make you more popular
- Always secure the domain name using a Secured Socket Layer (SSL) certificate to develop high level of trust among the users. Please note that SSL certificate would cost you additional money.
- Keep post some fresh and relevant content on your website. Do not copy content from somewhere to post it on your website.
- Check global availability of your domain name regularly to ensure that it is accessible. There are some third-party service providers, who can do it for additional cost or you can use some free ones if constrained by budget.
Please note that the price of Domain Name depends on a variety of factors (e.g. type of top level domain (TLD) used, commitment duration, additional services (e.g. privacy protection) requested by you, fancy names). Depending on your personal style preferences, one could choose a name from a very wide range of TLDs available. However, many people prefer .com, .org, .net ending names. In some cases of Cloud-hosted services, some fancy TLDs are not accepted by the service providers. Therefore, I would recommend you to choose common TLDs. Finally, it’s your choice.
